'hPR 2 0 22 DATE: April 16,1998 NOTE TO: Mirtone, A Unit of General Signal LTD FROM: Eric Compton, Engineering Aide

b. ,

Materials Safety Branch ,

Mirtone originally distributed the devices out of Tonewanda, New York. On January 18,1990 their distribution license was terminated when they moved their facility from New York to The Edwards Company, Inc. in Pittsfield, ME. A new distribution license was issued to Mirtone in care of The Edwards Company on April 4,1990. This warehouse facility served as a new point of distribution until this licensed was terminated on February 24,1995.

Mirtone is no longer authorized to distribute the Model 73450 smoke detector. As of February 16,1995, The Edwards Company, Inc. no longer possesses this model device at the their facility in Maine. Mirtone had previously been issued an inactive registration certificate for this smoke detector (NR-463-D-801-E). However, due to the fact that the company is no longer operating in the U.S. we have changed the vendor code from 463 to 8073; the registration certificate is now NR-8073-D-801-E.

NOTE: A Mirtone industries Inc.'s letter dated August 15,1988, could not be located in our background files nor NUDOCS.

DESCRIPTION: ., -

The Mitrone Industries Model 73450 is an ionization type smoke detector using 1

a single 1 microcurie source of Americium 241. The detector, intended for use with the ma'nufacturer's multi-zone fire alarm control units, and with similar system 3 of other manufacturers, is currently listed with Underwriters' I Labora-tories 'of Canada and has successfully undergone testing at Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. The 73450 mounts directly to a standard 4 inch octagon box without the need for extra brack'ets or bases.

4 The source is crimped into a holder'by the source manufacturer and inturn placed'~

inside a metal cover. This cover is secured to the printed circuit board. Thereby denying user access to the source. The destruction of the cover and circuit board is needed to gain access to the source. This would render the device useless. All material of construction of the device are equivalent to those used in currently approved ~s moke detectors.

LABELING: -

The device and point of sale of package are labelled in accordance with 10 CFR Section 32.29.

Dear Ms. Jones:

Subject:

Amendment to NRC License #31-24822-ole Control No. 20329, Your letter of 1 Dec. '88 i We are sending you a new sample of the 734700, along with all the information requested rin your letter ' to me of 1 Dec. '88. We have made a few changes to the unit since it was originally submitted to you, to comply with UL requirements and we wanted you to have the most up-to-date one.

As we discussed on the telephone, I wish to remind you that the 734700 detector configuration is an upgrade of the 73450A model to comply with the latest UL-268 standard. The majority of the changes are sin the j electronics portion, some minor modifications to the plastic housing parts and the addition of a plug-in feature versas the pigtail wire configuration used on the 73450A.

The only changes in the ionization chamber are as follows:

1) Reduction in the outer chamber air slots from 0.060" to 0.050" to obtain the equivalent of a bug screen (dwg. 25560501).
2) The hole configuration in the center of the electrode p~

disc has been modified (dwg. 25561011 and 25560481).

i.

3) The source holder support bracket has been changed f to increase the distance between electrodes (dwg. i

%5560572 and 25560471). !i

4) The source and source holder assembly as suppli ed k by Amersham is completely identical to the one used on the 73450A.
