UMTRA ANNUAL INSPECTION REPORT

Dear Mr. Edge:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has completed its review of " Annual Site inspection and Monitoring Report for Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act Title l Disposal Sites," dated April 1998. This report included assessments of the Canonsburg and Burrell sites

.that were inspected in November 1997. Based on this review, we conclude that the report is acceptable and meets the requirements of 10 CFR 40.27, related to activities required in the Long-Term Surveillance and Monitoring Plan (LTSP).

In the future, the staff suggests that the format of the report be modified to include a summary table (near the beginning of the report) that: lists the sites that were inspected during the year; lists the problems associated with those sites, if any; and directs the reader to the location in the report where the problems are dicsussed. Such a format will focus the reviewer on significant problems that were found or addressed during the year.

Ted Johnson discussed these items with you on July 2,1998. If you have any questions, he may be contacted at (301) 415-6658.

Sincerely,

[D. Gillen for]
