May 13, 1998 MEMORANDUM TO: Hubert J. Mill:r, R gional Administrator R:gion I gg gpg q, FROM: Hugh L. Thompsongyigh L. Thompa, k Deputy Executive Director for Regulatory Programs
SUBJECT:
INTEGRATED MATERIALS PERFORMANCE EVALUATION PROGRAM FOR REGION I On April 16,1998, the Management Review Board (MRB) met to consider the proposed final Integrated Materials Performance Evaluation Program (IMPEP) report for Region I (RI). The MRB found the RI program adequate to protect public health and safety.
Few changes were made to the final version of this report regarding RI's performance, based on comments at the MRB meeting, although the MRB did direct follow up by the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS) and the Office of State Programs (OSP) on items concerning the agency's training database and the potential overlap of IMPEP allegation reviews with other reviews of the regional allegation programs. These additions are summarized in Section 1.0, the introduction, of the final report (see Attachment 1). Since your March 16,1998, memorandum (see Attachment 2) adequately addressed all of the team's recommendations, and because there were no new recommendations added by the MRB, no follow up response is required by RI to this version of the report. Copies of 1998 regional IMPEP reports, and all future regional IMPEP reports, are being provided to the Commission, at their request, and are being posted on the NRC Web site for the first time.
I appreciate the courtesy and cooperation extended to the IMPEP team during the review and your support of the program. 4 Copies have been made forOEDO andforthose
