Beyond Nuclear Enforcement Petition re: the GE Mark I BWR hardened vent system Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2020 9:47:00 AM Mr. Gunter, This e-mail is to inform you that I will be the Petition Manager for your October 16, 2020, petition. I will keep you informed of the status as the evaluation of your petition progresses. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the process and/or the status of the petition review at any time.
In your petition you requested that the NRC suspend the operating licensees of BWR Mark I units until the hardened containment vents presently installed in these units are replaced/upgraded and that the NRC revoke the licenses of any BWR Mark I units that are not modified accordingly. The NRC staff has concluded that your petition has screened into the 2.206 process in accordance with Section II.A.2(d) of NRC Management Directive (MD) 8.11 Review Process for 10 CFR 2.206 Petitions (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML18296A043) and a Petition Review Board will begin its evaluation.
Following review in accordance with Sections II.B.1 of MD 8.11, the NRC staff has concluded that the containment ventilation related concerns expressed in your petition do not warrant immediate action.
As the PRB begins its evaluation I would like to ensure that you are aware that because the 2.206 petition process is a public process, the petition and all the information in it, including your identity, will be made public.
Thank you, Perry Buckberg Senior Project Manager / Agency 2.206 Petition Coordinator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation office: (301)415-1383 perry.buckberg@nrc.gov Mail Stop O-8B1a, Washington, DC, 20555-0001
