SUBJECT:

STOLEN REFRIGERATOR WITH LOW-LEVEL CONTAMINATION North Carolina radiation protection authorities have informed Region II that a refrigerator contaminated by low levels of fixed tritium was stolen on July 22 from a loading dock at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The university reported that contamination levels amounted to about 75 microcuries of fixed tritium. The refrigerator is believed to have been used for storage of radioactive materials utilized by the university.

Although the contamination does not pose a health hazard, both the university and the North Carolina Emergency Management Agency have issued press releases concerning the theft.

Region II has offered its assistance, but North Carolina authorities indicate it is not needed at this time.
