Dear Mr. Taylor:
SUIUECT: INFORMATION ON QUALIFICATION OF PORTABLE GAUGE INSTRUCTORS This letter is in reference to your conversation with Ms. Kevin M. Roughon of our offico concerning your licenso requirements for portablo gauge instructors. Currently, your licenso does not dictato specific requiroments for those instructors. Rathor, the license defines your Radiation Safety course contents and_that the Radiation Protection Officer is responsible for the final approval of portable gaugo users. Since you montioned that a license amendment would soon be flied for the approval of a new '
Radiation Protection Officer, the matter of specific qualifications for instructors will be reviewed at that time.
When our licenso reviewors evaluato your amondment application, they will use the enclosed guido as a standard for instructor qualifications (Item 7, page 6). This guido notes that tho '
instructor should have training equivalent to completion of an 80-hour course in radiation safety. Wo would expect a potential instructor to attend a vendor's courso for part of that training, and the remaininn hours could be obtained from another radiation safety courso. A copy of the Health Physics journal is enclosed which providos a variety of radiation safety courses from which you may chooso.
If you have any questions concerning this matter, please call Kevin Roughen at (404) 331-5565.
