January 2,1997 Mr. Theodore S. Michaels Senior Project Manager Non-Power Reactors and Decommissioning Project Directorate Division of Reactor Program Management Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regu!atory Commission Washington, DC 20555-0001 RE: Amendment to the OSURR License R-75 Docket 50-150
Dear Mr. Michaels:
Paragraph 2.B of The Ohio State University Research Reactor (OSURR) facility operating license states in part that we may use "up to 10 grams of contained Uranium-235 enriched to 93 percent in the form of fission chamber linings, foil targets and other research applications,...". We wish to amend this section to read as follows:
"up to 30 grams of highly enriched, contained Uranium-235 in the form of fission chamber linings, foil targets and other research applications,..."
The rationale for the change is that we currently have about 6 grams of 93% U-235 in fission chambers and a pending research application which could take us over our 10 gram limit. Also, by using the definition of highly enriched uranium found in 10CFR50 (20% or greater enrichment), we have greater flexibility in the purchase of fission chambers, foils, and other research applications.
If you have any questions on this matter, please contact Mr. Richard Myser at (614) 292-6755. j
Sincerely, 170040 Jose B. Cruz, Jr.
