Dear Senator Dole:
This is in response to one of your constituent's, Mr. Rupert Hays of Criss Optical Company, interest in the implementation of results from an NRC funded research project which involved testing of Criss Optical Company's MAG-1 eye-glasses. The MAG-1 eyeglasses are specially designed to be worn with certain types of respiratory protection devices without degrading the protection pro-vided by the device (by interfering with the air tight seal of the respirator facepiece to the wearer's face).
The results of the research on the Criss Optical Company's MAG-1 eyeglasses were presented at the recent meeting of industry's American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z88.2 working group that is tasked to revise ANSI standard Z88.2-1980. ANSI Z88.2-1980, a standard which provides guidance on the use of respiratory protection devices, has a prohibition against eyeglasses with temple bars or straps which pass between the sealing surface of the facepiece and wearer's face. The working group felt that the PAG-1 type of eyeglasses have the potential to provide respirator users more convenient vision correction subject to resolution of certain issues.
The working group will consider these issue's at the next meeting tentatively scheduled for the last week in October 1985. The NRC staff plans to take the ANSI recommendation into consideration before deciding whether these eyeglasses are precluded by the NRC regulation which prohibits anything that interferes with the seal of tightfitting facepieces against the skin.

However, the group recognized the glasses must be carefully fitted on each individual for each type of facepiece used to ensure that glasses do not degrade the protection provided'by the respirator or the service life of a self-contained breathing apparat'us. Once it is determined that an accept-able fit can be achieved for an/ individual, careful supervision in the field to ensure correct donning of the respirator and eyeglasses is needed to avoid interference of the frame infthe sealing area or having the straps twisted underneath the sealing arep The working group made th'is an issue for further consideration at the next meeting tentatively scheduled for the last week in October 1985. The NRC staff plans to take the ANSI recomendation into consideration before deciding whether or not the epeglasses should be encompassed in the NRC regulation which prohibits any' thing that interferes with the seal of tightfitting face-pieces against the skin.
