NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No.11-122 July 1, 2011 NRC HOLDING PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS THE WESTINGHOUSE HEMATITE DECOMMISSIONING PLAN The NRC has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the pending issuance of amendments to the Hematite license (NRC License No. SNM-00033), including approval of the sites decommissioning plan and the Hematite soil alternate disposal requests. NRC staff will be present to discuss the results of its review of the decommissioning plan and answer questions from the public.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, July 12, in the atrium of the Best Western Shalimar Conference Center, 1200 Gannon Drive, in Festus, Mo., from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Hematite plant, near Festus, operated as a nuclear fuel fabrication facility from 1954 until 2001. In 2009, Westinghouse submitted its current decommissioning plan for the facility, a decommissioning funding plan, and a physical security and nuclear material control plan. When approved, all these documents will be incorporated into the Westinghouse license as license amendments.

Further information on the meeting can be found at the NRC Public Meeting Schedule website http://www.nrc.gov/public-involve/public-meetings/index.cfm or contact T.R. Rowe of the NRC at 1-800-368-5642, extension 8008.
