She also questioned whether the company had the proper financial resources to carry out the project.
Shutting down the long effective but aging and increasingly unsafe Indian Point is incredibly important, but just the first step.
Proper and appropriate decommissioning and clean up is vital to the region. Not just locally, but up and down the Hudson River which means to the tens of MILLIONS of people living south of Indian Point in New York City and New Jersey at least.
This is not simply a local issue. It's not even just a New York issue. If Holtec is ill prepared or incapable of handling not just the clean up, but unforeseen problems that occur along the way (and there are ALWAYS unforeseen problems in any large scale project of any nature) the consequences for the entire region and the US economy on the whole could be grave. They not only need to be able to prove themselves experienced (they are not) and capable (highly questionable) to handle the job, but they need to prove themselves capable, experienced and prepared to react to urgent and unexpected problems and challenges along the way. By their own admission this is a 30-40 year project. How many more Hurricane Sandies can we expect in that time?
Does Holtec have any provisions for such (extremely likely) storms? Indian Point sits on a fault line and there have been infrequent and minor earth quakes in the region over the years. Does Holtec have a plan in the event of a larger tectonic event? I'm a lay person and a citizen and these are just two issues off the top of my https://www.fdms.gov/fdms/getcontent?objectId=090000648435a4c1&format=xml&showorig=false 02/14/2020
Page 2 of 2 head that we all deserve to have clear headed and advanced plans for from the company with which we are entrusting our future.
Please expand the comment period and PLEASE conduct a critical, skeptical and more thorough than you previously deemed imaginable examination of HOLTEC and their ability to safely and effectively handle this job.
There is simply no wiggle room or reaction time to compensate if they fail. There is no failsafe. No plan B.
