Docket No. 50-313 Supplementary Information .
Dear Mr. Giambusso:
Amendment do. 37 to the Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Final Safety Analysis Repcrt 1.n::hded a description of a cross-connect betwcen the two low pressure injection lines to the reactor vessel which is designed to improve ECCS performance in the event of a break in a core flood tank injection line. Enclosed are test results verifying the pertorn.cnce of the cavitating venturis installed in the low pressure injecticn lines to produce the desired flow rates.
Very truly yours, y

.- CAVI . .,71::C VC:Y1'".I Tr.".T nTj:!*!.T", ppp Crossovcu lines con:sining cavitating venturis between the redundant low prescure injection (LP1) headers in the Decay Heat Rcaaval System arc provided to insure that sufficient flov vill be available for core cooling if a rupture occurs in the inlet piping. Figure 1 shows a simplified schematic diagram of the inlet piping and crousover network.-
Flow through a rupture downutress of the venturi is limited by the device when it ic in the cavitating mode. Velocity head at the throat is equal to the total pressure head, so that the fluid reaches its vapor pressure in the throat and flashes into vapor, limiting flow. Delivery of at least one half the availabic flowrate of one DH removal pump to the reactor vessel is expected. through the intact line assuming a single active failure in addition to the rupture. -
T: sting of the cavitating venturi by Babcock and Wilcox at Alliance Research Center has shown that the devices will perform as specified. Data recorded during these tests has insured us that the above condition of minimum flow "
will be met. -
Initial testing of the venturi (Venturi No.1, Figure 3) shows that flow' varies as the square root of the absolute inlet pressurc ratio. The inlet l 1
configuration of the device was remachined and retested to insure design flov l l
cud to minimize noise and vibrntion. Results of , testing of the remachined device
- f i
cre shown on Figure 3 an Vent uri No. 2. Final profile of the device is shown 1 in Figure 2. l Data' below, for Venturi No. 2, shows th'at the device will deliver a constant l
flow for a greatly varying differential pressure, as expected.
