Arkansas Nuclear One-Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-313 and 50-368 License Nos. DPR-51 and NPF-6 Fire Protection Schedule (File: 1510, 2040; 2-1510, 2-2040)
Gentlemen:
In our letter to you of March 26, 1980, we stated that all ANO-1 and 2 fire protection S.E.R. modifications, with the exception of ANO-2 items 3.14 and 3.18, would be completed by October 1, 1980. It has recently been brought to our attention that this commitment can no longer be fully met by this date and, therefore, an extension in the implementa-tion schedule will be required.
A majority of the S.E.R. items for both ANO-1 and 2 have been completed I at this time. However, there still remain a few items requiring sub- l stantial work. The manpower needed to implement these few remaining items has recently been diverted from these tasks by high priority j maintenance requirements resulting from our recent unscheduled outages, j 8 ogg970 Tio MEMBEA MtOOLE SOUTH UTIUTIES SYSTEM

e A summary of the S.E.R. items which will not be complete by October 1, 1980, is provided below:
ANO-1 S.E.R. ITEM 3.2 - Separation of Power Cables in Manholes Our engineering staff is presently evaluating two different types of barrier design for the protection of the redundant power cables in the yard area manhole. It is expected that a final design will 4
be available for NRC review within the next three to four weeks.
If it is determined at that time that this design meets with NRC 3 approval and can be installed safely, taking into account both
- overall plant safety, and workmen safety during installation, then
- this modification could possibly be complete by the end of November or early December.
l
- S.E.R. ITEM 3.16 - Associated Circuits l
Our evaluation of associated circuits at ANO-1 is now complete. It was determined from this evaluation that a fire involving associa-ted circuits would not affect the operation of safe shutdown equip-ment. Therefore, no modifications will be necessary for this item.
This evaluation of associated circuits will be submitted to the NRC by October 1, 1980.
ANO-2 ,--
S.E.R. ITEM 3.5 - Protection of Redundant Cables in the Hallway-Elevation 372 The deluge system for this hallway will be completely piped and operational for local manual actuation by November 1, 1980. The automatic actuation system for this deluge system is incorporated in the smoke detector system as described in S.E.R. item 3.14.
S.E.R. ITEM 3.7 - Protection of Redundant Cables in The Switchgear Room All redundant cables in the Switchgear Room have been identified by our engineering staff. The design modification which will specifi-cally describe where flame retardant barriers will be placed is now being finalized. It is expected that this design package will be available for NRC review by mid-October, with the barriers being in place by November 1, 1980.
S.E.R. ITEM 3.11 - Protection of Redundant Reactor Protection System Cables The deluge system for this area will be completely piped and op-erational for local manual actuation by November 1,1980. The automatic actuation system for this deluge system is incorporated in the smoke detector system as described in S.E.R. item 3.14.
e S.E.R. ITEM 3.12 - Fire Dampers Due to procurement and available manpower problems the scheduled date for having all fire dampers installed has been delayed one month to November 1, 1980.
S.E.R. ITEM 3.14 - Smoke Detectors Procurement of equipment and lack of available manpower for in-stallation has delayed the installation of the smoke detector system. This system, when complete, will, as part of its function, activate the deluge systems required by S.E.R. items 3.5 and 3.11.
In our letter to you of March 26, 1980, we informed you that this system could not be completely installed until our next refueling outage. This is still the case, however, we are examining the possibility of temporarily wiring parts of the system such that portions of the system might be placed in service prior to re-fueling. We will keep you informed as to the status of this sys-tem.
S.E.R. ITEM 3.18 - Reactor Coolant Pump Oil Collection System In our letter to you of March 26, 1980, we stated that the RCP oil collection system would be installed by the end of our upcoming refueling outage or possibly earlier if we experienced an outage of sufficient duration. We are pleased to report that this collection system will be completely installed by;the end of our current outage.
In summary, it is now our intent to have completed by November 1,1980, all fire protection S.E.R. modifications, with the exception of /NO-1 S.E.R. item 3.2, which is presently scheduled for completion by mid-November or early December, and ANO-2 S.E.R. item 3.14, which as our letter of March 26, 1980 states would be complete by the end of our upcoming refueling outage. Also incorporated in the ANO-2 S.E.R. item 3.14 is the automatic actuation of the deltge systems of ANO-2 S.E.R.
items 3.5 and 3.11.
We trust this adequately explains our present schedule for imple-mentation of the above S.E.R. Fire Protection items.
Very truly yours,
