2. Letter dated May 28, 1981, Ronald E. Engel, General Electric Co., to T. A. Ippolito, NRC;

Subject:

Additional Information negarding Extension of Emergency Core Cooling System Performance Limits

Dear Mr. Stolz:

At the request of M. Fairtile of your staff, we have rovfewed the above referenced letters and have discussed them with the General Electric Company. General Electric has advised us that the information contained in the May 6 and May'28 letters is applicable to both Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3.

We have reviewed the Unit 3 peak cladding temperatures (PCT) for each fuel type given in General Electric Document NEDO-l 24082 Errata and Addenda Sheets Numbers 2,3 and 4, previously l submitted to you, and have determined that these PC*'s do not exceed the PCT's assumed in the May 6 and May 28, 1:<81 letters for average planar exposures up to 40,000 megawatt days per short con. In addition, General Electric Company has advised us that 00l 3

the analyses presented in NEDO-24082 Errata and Addenda Sheets Numbers 2,3 and 4 do not take cred2t for improvements .in ECCS ,

evaluation models presented in the referenced May 6 and May 28, 1981 letters.

Based on the above, we request that the NRC approve MAPLHGR's for all Peach Bottom Unit 3 8x8 fuel types to a maximum exposure of 40,000 megawatt days per short ton.

We recognize that the May 6 and May 28 letters provide information to support extended MAPLHGR's limits for exposures up to 50,000 megawatt-days per metric ton, however, since the analyse:' presented in NEDO-24082 only extends to 40,000 megawatt-days per short ton, we may request further extension of the MAPLHGR limits at some future date.

Should you have any questions or require any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, 9
