http://www.nrc.gov No.06-114September 20, 2006 NRC ANNOUNCES OPPORTUNITY TO REQUEST A HEARING ON LICENSE RENEWALAPPLICATION FOR FITZPATRICK NUCLEAR POWER STATIONThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission is announcing the opportunity to request a hearing on anapplication to renew the operating license for the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Station for an
additional 20 years.The FitzPatrick nuclear plant is a boiling water reactor located eight miles northeast ofOswego, N.Y. Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., submitted the renewal application Aug. 1. The
current operating license for FitzPatrick expires Oct. 17, 2014.The NRC staff has determined that the application contains sufficient information for theagency to formally "docket," or file, the application and begin its technical review. Docketing the application does not preclude requesting additional information as the review proceeds; nor does it indicate whether the Commission will grant the application.
A notice of opportunity to request a hearing was published today in the Federal Register. Thedeadline for requesting a hearing is Nov. 20. Petitions may be filed by anyone whose interest may be
affected by the license renewal and who wishes to participate as a party in the proceeding. NRC staff will conduct a public meeting Oct. 12 in the vicinity of the plant to discuss thelicense renewal process and the scope of the agency's environmental review for the license renewal application. More information about that meeting is contained in today's Federal Register notice, andan additional announcement will be made closer to the date.A request for hearing and a petition for leave to intervene must be filed with the Secretary ofthe Commission, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555-0001, Attention:Rulemaking and Adjudications Staff.
