DIGITAL INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL "PROCESS FORDEVELOPMENT OF INTERIM STAFF GUIDANCE (ISG) IN SUPPORT OF REVIEWS OF DIGITAL I&C APPLICATIONS"
Dear Mr. Marion:
The purpose of this letter is to provide you, for information, the enclosed "Process forDevelopment of Interim Staff Guidance (ISG) in Support of Reviews of Digital I&C Applications" by which the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will provide interim guidance to staff reviewers of digital I&C applications. This interim guidance process is similar to the ones developed for reviews of license renewaland early site permit applications. The principal purpose of Digital I&C interim staff guidance is to ensure a predictable, high quality and uniform staff review and to present a well-defined base to evaluate digital I&C applications. The development of ISGs supports the digital I&C review process by providing timely updated guidance to digital I&C applicants, staff reviewers of digital I&C applications, as well as information to stakeholders. Approved ISGs will serve as a bridge and will be used by staff to review Digital I&C applications until the ISGs can be further refined through interaction with the industry and are incorporated, as appropriate, into future revisions of appropriate regulatory documents. If you have any questions, please contact me at 301-415-1274.Sincerely,/RA/John A. Grobe, Associate Director for Engineering and Safety Systems Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
