UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON , D.C. 2055 5-0001 The Honorable John A. Barrasso Chairman , Committee on Environment and Public Works United States Senate Washington , DC 20510
Dear Mr. Chairman:
January 9 , 2018 On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am transmitting the twelfth monthly report responding to the December 21 , 2016 , letter from the Committee on Environment and Public Works and the Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee. The enclosed reflects updates through November 2017 , and a new format to incorporate revisions requested in your letter of October 31 , 2017 , regarding performance metrics. Your recent letter also asked for information related to NRC's management of research resources. The information you requested is included as Appendix B to the enclosed monthly report. The NRC recognizes the importance of performance metrics. Consistent with the Government Performance and Results Act , we measure and report on the NRC's performance using a system of organizational performance indicators to support our strategic goals and objectives.
Many of these indicators are reported through the Congressional Budget Justification , while others are tracked internally at both the agency and office levels. The agency continues to institutionalize specific actions related to Project Aim , which will shape our organization going forward. The NRC is also pursuing additional activities designed to improve our effectiveness and efficiency as we carry out our safety and security mission. Standardizing and centralizing support staff functions and implementing an enhanced strategic workforce planning process are two examples. The enclosure represents the staff's effort to provide the monthly report with the revised content that you requested. I would welcome an opportunity for our respective staffs to discuss any questions about the monthly reports and how to best meet the Committee's oversight needs. If you need anything additional , please contact me or have your staff contact Eugene Dacus , Director of the Office of Congressional Affairs , at (301) 415-1776. Kristine L. Svinicki
Enclosure:
