SUBJECT:

COMANCilE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 SEISMIC DESIGN OF CONDUlT SDAR: CP-86-53 (INTERIM REPORT)

Gentlemen:

On October 21, 1986, we notified you by cur letter, logged TXX-6054, of a deficiency involving the seismic design of conduit, which we deemed reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). This is an interim report submitted to status corrective action implemented to dt.te.

The testing program to evaluate the ability of adhesives or clamps ap) lied to conduit couplings after installation to resist torsional moments has seen completed. The results indicate that the adhesives or clam will not resist those torsional moments, llowever, additional testing has Lagun on a heretofore unused combination of fiberglass cloth and resin which appears to be suitable for the loading conditions identified based upon preliminary testing. Formal testing of the fiberglass cloth / resin material is currently scheduled for completion by June 30, 1987. The identification of further corrective actions, including the issue of revised design documents, is dependent upon the results of this testing.

We will submit our next report on this issue no later than September 21, 1987.

Very truly yours, bY U1MIb W. G. Counsil
