September 12, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT-- PNS-77-33 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically, all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

,B0MB THREAT A member of the security department at the Lowell University Nuclear Center received a telephone call at approximately 1:00 a.m., September 12 1977, from an anonymous caller who stated, "There is a bomb in your garage." The Lowell Police Department was notified and the Nuclear .
Center and surrounding area'was searched. The FBI was notified by i Region 1. ,
.i Media interest is expected because of news interest in nuclear facilities.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been informed. A press release is
,l not planned by the licensee and/or NRC.
The IAT has been notified.
NRC, Region 1, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Director of the Nuclear Center at 2:10 a.m. 6 on September 12, 1977.
