SUBJECT:

Waterford SES Unit 3 Docket No. 50-382 Generic Letter 83-28 Required Actions Based on Generic Implications of Salem ATWS Events

REFERENCE:

LP&L Letter W3P83-2915 The subject Generic Letter requires a response by November 8,1983 unless an extension is requested in advance. The above referenced letter indicated that our extension request would be submitted no later than October 7, 1983.

LP&L is proceeding expeditiously in assessing its current compliance with the positions in the subject letter and planning actions required to improve certain areas.

It is presently expected that we will participate with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and the Combustion Engineering Owners Group in addressing certain requirements and retain outside contractors to address others.

Since these industry groups and contractors have not yet had sufficient time to formulate specific proposals and schedules it will be impossible for us to provide the information required by the Generic Letter by November 8.

It is expected that this information will be available by January 15, 1984 at which time we will make the initial submittal of our plans and schedules as requested.

If you have any questions please advise.

Yours very truly, K.W. Cook Nuclear Support and Licensing Manager i O KWC/ MAL /ch cc:
