SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 APPLICATION OF LOW SULPHUR CONTENT A588 STEEL SDAR: CP-85-51

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On December 6, 1985, we verbally notified your Mr. S. Phillips of a defi-ciency regarding the improper segregation, control and application of low sulphur content A558 steel used in the fabrication of pipe whip and moment restraints.

This is an interim report of a potentially reportable-item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). We have submitted an interim report logged TXX-4664, dated January 6, 1986.

Our evaluation to date has revealed no condition adverse to safety.

We are continuing our evaluation and anticipate completion of our final report by March 7, 1986.

Very truly yours, W. G. Counsil
