HIGH-ENERGY DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY
Dear Dr. Moore:
Thank you for the information in your letter dated June 30,1998, regarding High-Energy Digital Radiography (HEDR). As I informed Mr. Robert Moss of your staff, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will not conduct a public meeting with you or your staff to discuss the use of HEDR for volumetric inspection of spent fuel casks until a utility or vendor contacts NRC requesting to use the system. However, I invite you or your staff to attend a meeting between NRC and the Nuclear Energy Institute scheduled for August 26,1998. This will be a public meeting at which the industry will have the opportunity to present its views on the ultrasonic inspection of spent fuel storage cask closure welds. Please keep in mind that the meeting is open to public observation only. The NRC will be available to answer questions from the public at the conclusion of the meeting. Enclosed is the pertinent meeting notice.
