==Dear Mr. Johnson:==
On May 21, 1986, we notified you that the issue involving difficulties in starting and operating the safety chilled water chiller units was reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). The interim report logged TXX-4820, dated May 21, 1986, gave the corrective action as the installation of a by-pass line around the Component Cooling Water (CCW) heat exchanger. An alternative solution is currently being evaluated by York International which may be more cost effective than the originally proposed by-nass line.
An additional concern resulting from this issue is the possible effects of low CCW temperatures on the Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) thermal barrier coolers.
Westinghouse Corporation has been asked to evaluate this concern.
The evaluations by York and Westinghouse are expected to be completed by the end of June, 1986. We are continuing our evaluation and anticipate submitting our next report by July 24, 1986.
Very truly yours, YhdY

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 SAFETY CHILLED WATER CHILLER UNITS SDAR: CP-86-18 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr.
