Docket No.:

50-321 NL-08-0345 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555-0001 Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant - Unit 1 Commitment for Examination of 12" Recirculation Inlet Nozzle Dissimilar Metal Welds Ladies and Gentlemen:

By letter NL-08-0316 dated February 29,2008 Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) provided information to NRC regarding the status of Hatch reactor vessel dissimilar metal welds. In that letter, SNC grouped the welds by mitigation status and inspection techniques used, One grouping included five 12" recirculation inlet nozzle dissimilar metal welds that are mitigated by hydrogen water chemistry (HWC) and Induction Heat Stress Improvement (IHSI), which have not yet been examined in accordance with Section XI, Appendix VIII, Supplement 10. In the February 29, 2008 letter, SNC indicated that these five welds would be examined in accordance with Section XI, Appendix VIII, Supplement 10 dUring the 2010 refueling outage.

On March 3, 2008, SNC and NRC personnel further discussed this topic. In that telecon, NRC requested that SNC characterize the inspection plans for those five welds as a Regulatory Commitment.

Accordingly, Enclosure 1 provides the requested commitment.

This letter contains NRC Commitments. If you have any questions, please contact Ray Baker at 205-992-7367.
