| MEMORANDUM FOR:
| |
| Warren Minners, Director Division of Safety Issue Resolution Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research FROM:
| |
| Brian W. Sheron, Director Division of Systems Research Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research
| |
| | |
| ==SUBJECT:==
| |
| UPDATE OF GENERIC ISSUE MANAGEMENT CONTROL SYSTEM (GIMCS)
| |
| The following three issues currently being tracked by GIMCS have been incorporated into the Severe Accident Research Program (SARP) Plan:
| |
| ISSUE NUMBER TITLE II.B.5(1)
| |
| Behavior of Severely Damaged Fuel II.B.5(2)
| |
| Behavior of Core Melt II.B.5(3)
| |
| Effect of Hydrogen Combustion on Containment.
| |
| Structures Issues II.B.5(1) and II.B.5(2) are part of the Long Term Issue L2, "In-Vessel Core Melt Progression and Hydrogen Generation;" Issue II.B.5(3) is part of the Long Term Issue L3, " Hydrogen Transport and Combustion." As documented in NUREG-1365,
| |
| " Revised Severe Accident Research Program Plan," issue L2 covers in-vessel core melt progression from the start of core uncovery to reactor vessel failure.
| |
| Issue L3 includes research on'high temperature /high steam concentration combustion, and deflagration-to-detonation transition to assess the possible threat to containment and safety-related equipment.
| |
| Since Issues II.B.5(1), (2) and (3) are an integral part of the SARP, there is no need to duplicate the effort to track them sepErately under GIMCS. Therefore, I
| |
| ~
| |
| recommend that the next update of GIMCS be revised accordingly.
