CONTAMINATION EXCEEDING LIMITS IDENTIFIED ON EMPTY RADI0 PHARMACEUTICAL PACKAGES On May 6,1997, the licensee notified the NRC Operations Center that two empty packages, transported from Barnes Hospita, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the licensee's facility, were found to have levels of contamination in excess of the Department of Transportation (DOT) limits.
The empty Jackages were placed in the receipt area of the licensee's facility w1ile the technician comaleted a delivery to Barnes West 4
Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. When the technician returned to the Sharmacy, the licensee identified radiation levels of 0.2 millirem per lour on the technician's hands and 2 millirem per hour on the technician's pants. 50.000 disintegrations per minute (dpm) of removable contamination was found on the technician's hands. The licensee detected radiation levels of 20 millirem per hour and 30 millirem per hour on the handles of the packages picked up from Barnes Hospital. Removable contamination on the handles of the packages were determined to be 1.4 million disintegrations per minute (dpm) and 1.2 million dpm. The applicable DOT limit is 2200 dpm per 100 square centimeters. The radioactive contamination identified was determined to be technetium-99m.
Contamination was found in the licensee's transport vehicle, in the licensee's facility, and on the technician's clothing. The worker, the vehicle, and the licensee's facility were successfully decontaminated.
Personnel at Barnes West Hos) ital reported that no contamination was identified either on the paccage delivered by the pharmacy or in the area where the package was delivered.
NRC Region III (Chicago) will review the circumstances surrounding this incident during the next scheduled inspection.
The State of Missouri and the NRC Office of Nuclear Material Safety And Safeguards have been notified. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
1 NRC Region III was notified of the event at 9:15 p.m. (CDT) on May 6.
