The remaining qualification issue yet to be resolved is a comparison of the cable temperatures in the area of concern to the existing established qualified temperatures. SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 IMPACT OF HELB TEMPERATURES ON QUALIFIED EQUIPMENT OUTSIDE CONTAINMENT SDAR: CP-84-12 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On June 4,1984, we verbally notified your Mr. D. Hunnicutt of a deficiency involving the environmental qualification of equipment outside containment for high energy line breaks (HELB). This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). Our most recent interim rsport was logged TXX-5029, dated September 19, 1986.

The remaining qualification issue yet to be resolved is a comparison of the cable temperatures in the area of concern to the existing established qualified temperatures. After identifying cable types and locations, a thermal transient analysis will be performed to determine the temperatures to which the outer cable layer is exposed. These temperatures will be used to i

determine if the ambient temperature will exceed the cables' qualified environmental temperature.

Current project scheduling indicates our evaluation will be completed %y i

December 1, 1986.
