Calculations are being prepared to represent " worst case" conditions which assume that one (1) M-contact lap splice bar and two (2) vertical wall bars do not provide any strength to the wall. SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 NON-CONTACT LAP SPLICES IN THE AUXILIARY BUILDING SDAR: CP-86-66 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On September 26, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. I. Barnes of a potential deficiency regarding vertically placed rebar exposed during the inspection of core bores in the Auxiliary Building that apparently do not satisfy the criteria of a code defined lap splice. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).

Additional concrete has been removed from a portion of an Auxiliary Building wall approximately 147 feet long at El. 815 feet.

Engineering evaluation of exposed reinforcing steel has concluded that two (2) vertical dowels and two (2) lap splice bars have not been installed within their prescribed location.

One of the lap splices conforms to co N requirements for a non-contact lap splice and one does not.

Calculations are being prepared to represent " worst case" conditions which assume that one (1) M-contact lap splice bar and two (2) vertical wall bars do not provide any strength to the wall. The anticipated completion date for these calculations is November 14, 1986. We will submit our next report on this issue no later than December 5, 1986.

Very truly yours, 8611040405 861027 PDR ADOCK 05000445
