On July 25, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. I. Barnes of a deficiency involving the seismic design of conduit. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).
On July 25, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. I. Barnes of a deficiency involving the seismic design of conduit. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e).
This deficiency occurs whenever a conduit changes direction and terminates in an airdrop with no support provided between the change in direction and the airdrop and a coupling is present prior to the change. During a seismic event, the unsupported portion of the conduit places a torsional moment at the coupling. The inability of the coupling to resist the torsional moment may result in significant motions at the free end of the conduit which would be resisted by the cable. The cable has not been designed for the loads imposed by such motion.
