(1) W. G. Counsil letter to J. R. Miller, dated September 15, 1933.
Gentlemen:
l L.                            Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 2                                                                                            l Thermal Shield Disposal
                                                                                                                                                                      )
l By Reference (1), Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) provided the                                                                                    l NRC Staff with a general discussion of the plans for ultimate disposal of the                                                                                l Millstone Unit No. 2 thermal shield. The following information is provided                                                                                  I concerning the details of our plans to accomplish this task.                                                                                                I Currently, the thermal shield is being stored on site. As was reported in Reference (1), it was cut into six, sixty degree (600) segments. Four (4) segments are being stored in the Millstone Unit No. 2 cask laydown area in the spent fuel pool. The remaining two (2) segments are stored in one of the two onsite transport casks in the railway access area.
Preparations are underway for the disposal of the thermal shield segments at the low level waste disposal site at Barnwell, S. C. NNECO intends to cut each of the remaining six segments into three strips, each being a twenty degree (200) segment of the shield. The cutting operation will be performed in the cask washdown pit located in the vicinity of the Millstone Unit 2 spent fuel pool. The cask washdown pit will be appropriately modified through the installation of a stainless steel liner to ensure its integrity. A mechanical cutting process similar to that utilized to remove the shield from the core barrel will be used to make the additional cuts.
The thermal ,hield strips will then be shipped to Barnwell in a spent fuel railroad transportation cask. The cask liner will be replaced with a design suitable for shipping the shield segments. Three shipments to the disposal site will be necessary.
