SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR FEEDWATER PUMP (UPDATE)
The licensee's investigation has concluded that vibration in the South Reactor Feed Pu'ip (SRFP) turbine, coupled with the recent inadequate securing of the outboard bearing ct.p. was the cause of the turbine failure.
Licensee documentation shows the SRFP turbine has had vibration problems since 1983 and the condition has steadily deteriorated. During pre-operational testing, the turbine vibrated 7 to 8 thousandths of an inch between 1600 and 1700 rpm. Normal vibration is less than one thousandth of an inch. The vibration decreased however, during normal running speeds of 5000 to 6000 rpm. The vendor, Transamerica DeLaval, Inc.,
told the licensee that the SRFP turbine rotor is bowed approximately 20 thousandths of an inch.
The licensee and the vendor continue to study the problem.
The North Reactor Feed Pump (NRFP) has no history of vibration problems. The licensee has inspected the bearings and instrumented the turbine and believes the NRFP can be operated safely.
The Senior Resident Inspector continues to monitor the licensee's activities.
The State of Michigan will be notified.
The Senior Resident Inspector was notified of this updated information at 6:15 a.m., (CDT), August 5, 1985. This information is current as of 11 a.m.(CDT),
