WORKER lhGESTION OF P-32 This is to update previous notificatiMs fdgartling;the ingestion n          of P-32 by a female graduate student. The student was whole body counted'on March 11. 18, 25 and April 8 at New York University (NYU). With the assistance of a volunteer P-32 therapy patient.
NYU was able to calibrate their system and estimate an uptake of $30 mci ingested on or about February 29. This uptake translates into a bone surface dose of approximately 20 rads. Brookhaven National Laboratory also provided some assistance, performing cytogenetic studies. No chromosome breaks or abnomalities were found.
The Department of Health and the New York Police Department are continuing to investigate. The Department of Health has had an inspector on site every day since the incident was reported. The Department has found a continuing problem of food and drink in laboratories, particularly in refrigerators used to store radioactive material including P-32.     The Department has performed extensive contamination surveys with no significant results. Department of Health senior staff are performing a detailed broad license program review. To date, the principal investigators pemit to use radioactive material has been suspended, and the Department is considering further enforcement action.
The Department will be submitting an Abnormal Occurrence Report on this incident.
Unless further unexpected details are uncovered, the Region does not intend to issue further PNs on this case.
