| DEFECTIVE REACTOR COOLANT Pl!MP HATCH BOLTS----(UPDATE)

| The licensee is continuing its evaluation of defective and incorrectly installed bolts on the hatch covers which provide access from the upper containw. ant to the reactor coolant pumps areas of the lower containment. Both units are affected -- Unit 1 is in a refueling outage and Unit 2 was shut down on August 27, 1987.

| Each unit has four hatch covers, each providing access to a reactor coolant pump. The
| |
| , licensee's inspection determined that for Unit 1 the bolts are correctly installed on one l hatch cover, five of the 18 bolts were not installed properly on the second, two of 19 were i not installed on the third, and one of the 19 was not installed on the fourth hatch cover.

| The faulty installations generally involve cutting and welding of the bolts during the i
| |
| original installation. This procedure, when used, differs from the installation drawings.
| |
| The licensee is continuing to evaluate the potential effects of the improper bolt installations to determine if modifications are necessary. While these evaluations are unoerway, the licensee has decided to conduct Unit 2 steam generator eddy current testing and ice condenser surveillance, which was previously planned for a 40-day outage beginning in October.

| The resident inspectors will monitor the licensee's review of the hatch cover bolts and other outage activities.

| The State of Michigan will be notified.
