Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

In our March 5, 1980, letter to you South Carolina Electric and Gas Company provided an interim report on the failure of a thrust bearing on one of our diesel generators manufactured by Colt Industries. In followup to the question regarding successful completion of shop tests, the attached copy of a letter from Colt Industries to the NRC dated March 5, 1980, pro-vides an acceptable answer.

Since all repairs have been made .and questions resolved, this letter is considered the final report on thi: item. If you require additional information, please let us know.

, We have completed our inspections of the crankshaft thrust bearings on the two PC-2.5 generator sets at Union Electric's, Callaway Unit One. The plugs were properly installed in both units. Both units are free of the reported potential defect. , ,

Our earlier report indicated we were evaluating the design to permit  :

explanation of the apparent satisfactory operation of the South Carolina Electric & Gas Unit during shop tests in our factory prior to shipment followed by failure during start-up at the Summer site. These units.are equipped with large capacity external thrust bearings to permit satisfac-tory operation under high fore and aft forces resulting from a seismic

~ event. The actual load imposed on these bearings during shop tests is 3

'  : very low and perhaps zero. We have concluded that the bearing was lightly loaded during shop tests, did not fail during such tests, but subsequently failed.

_ We will be inspecting other shipped units prior to initial operation and will report,the results of those inspections as they are made.

A copy of this report is being fonvarded to.the utilities involved.
