On March 12, 2012, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)issuedanorder (Reference 1)toSouthernNuclearOperating Company.Reference1was immediately effectiveanddirected the Vogtle Electric GeneratingPlant-Units3and4 (VEGP 3&4)to develop, implement, and maintainguidanceandstrategiesto maintainorrestorecore cooling, containment,andspent fuel pool cooling capabilities intheeventofa beyond-design-basis external event.Specific requirements are outlined in Attachment3of Reference 1.Reference1 required submissionofan Overall Integrated Plan withinoneyearafterissuanceof the final NRC InterimStaffGuidance(Reference2).Reference2endorses industry guidance document NEI 12-06, Revision0(Reference3) with clarificationsandexceptions identified inReference2.Reference4providedtheVEGP 3&4 OverallIntegratedPlan.
U.S.NuclearRegulatoryCommission ND-18-0986 Page 2 Reference 1 requires submission of a status report at six-month intervals following submittal of the Overall Integrated Plan.Reference 3 provides direction regarding the contentofthestatus reportsandwas followed in developingtheenclosed report.Thepurposeofthisletteristo provide the tenth six-month status report pursuant to Section IV, Condition C.2, of Reference 1,thatdelineatesprogressmade in implementing the requirementsofReference 1.Theenclosed status report provides an update of milestone accomplishmentssincethelast six-month update, includinganychangestothe compliance method, schedule,orneed for reliefandthebasis, if any.Thisletter containsnonew regulatory commitments.Thisletter has been reviewed and determinednottocontain security-related information.Ifyou have any questions, please contact Mr.Dave Midlik at 706-848-6737.
