Dear Chairman Jaczko:
.I am writing to respectfully request the Commission extend the proposed relicensing rule comment period 90 days in order to provide for an additional meeting in San Luis Obispo, near the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. The purpose of this public meeting is to seek comments on the proposed rule on the Summary of Findings .on National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Issues for License Renewal of Nuclear Power Plants and the draft revision of Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants. The currently planned September 22, 2009 Commission meeting in Westlake Village does not adequately serve my constituents.
I believe the NRC's commitment to providing website access for public participation in these proceedings via website access or teleconferencing is not sufficient given the importance of this subject matter. Moreover, the location for this public meeting will certainly deter significant input from those that will be most impacted by the findings of the NEPA and GEIS documents. For example, the distance from San Luis Obispo to Westlake Village is roughly 150 miles, or about 3 hours3.472222e-5 days
8.333333e-4 hours
4.960317e-6 weeks
1.1415e-6 months
of driving time. For my constituents this presents a difficult hardship, and I find such discouragement to public participation in communities affected by nuclear power to be very disappointing.
As you know, the San Luis Obispo community has played an important role in the governance of nuclear power as demonstrated by participation in previous NRC hearings, meetings, conferences, and court decisions. I contend their input is significant in the
- future management of nuclear power security and safety, and therefore request you schedule an additional public meeting near the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant as soon as possible.
Thank you for your consideration of this request. I look forward to your reply.
