Dear Mr. Fertel:
The Commission accepts the industry's proposal to conduct a briefing of the Commission onthe implementation of risk-informed and performance-based initiatives. The Commission briefing is scheduled on Thursday, August 2, 2007, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. The meeting willbe open to the public and will be held in the Commission's Conference Room on the first floor of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) headquarters building at One White Flint North, Rockville, Maryland. I am enclosing a copy of the draft meeting agenda for your information (enclosure 1). The Commission would like to hear your views on the quality of PRAs and PRA standards. In particular, the Commission would like NEI to provide an update on internal events at power and fire PRAs, since these are the two most significant contributors to risk. The Commission would also like you to provide an update on the status of the schedule for completing consensus standards for low power, shutdown, and seismic risk. Please let us know who plans to brief the Commission.To assist the Commission in preparing for the meeting, please send a copy of any writtenmaterial addressed to Ms. Michelle Schroll (rms1@nrc.gov) in the Office of the Secretary, byJuly 26, 2007, so that it can be distributed to the Commission for review in advance of themeeting. Enclosed are guidelines for viewgraphs, if you choose to use them (enclosure 2). If you intend to use viewgraphs, please notify Ms. Schroll as soon as possible. Paper or electronic presentation formats, such as PowerPoint, are acceptable.This Commission meeting will be webcast live at the Web address: www.nrc.gov. If you usePowerPoint or other electronic presentation format, we would appreciate receiving your materials in electronic form so your viewgraphs can be posted on the website prior to the meeting. Please e-mail them to rms1@nrc.gov and smj@nrc.gov.You may also fax material to (301) 415-1672. If you have any questions, please contact Ms.Schroll at 301-415-1651. Please bring 100 copies of your material to the meeting for members of the public. If you are unable to provide these copies, please advise.Your presentation at the Commission meeting should be based on the assumption thatCommissioners are familiar with the content of your written material. Please plan your oral presentation for 30 minutes or less, discussing the important points on which you wish to focus the Commission's attention. Reserved visitor parking for Commission guests is available. If you wish to use reservedparking, please notify Ms. Schroll in advance. If reserved parking has been arranged, please check-in with the security staff at the entrance to the NRC campus on Marinelli Drive when you arrive. Security will call for an escort.
