September 8, 2008 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE - PNO-IV-2008-007A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV, Arlington, Texas, staff on this date.

NOTICE OF UNUSUAL EVENT AT DIABLO CANYON, UNIT 2 - UPDATE
DESCRIPTION: On September 6, 2008, Diablo Canyon Unit 2 resumed operation after the main transformer was repaired. Pacific Gas and Electric had shutdown Unit 2 and declared a Notification of Unusual Event (NOUE) at Diablo Canyon, following a fire in that unit's main transformer on August 17, 2008. Damage was limited to the main transformer and several windows in adjacent buildings, which were broken as a result of the fire. No safety related equipment was affected by the event. Unit 1 was also unaffected by the fire.
NRC staff inspected licensee corrective actions to repair the Unit 2 main transformer and monitored licensee restart activities.
The State of California has been notified. The information in this preliminary notification update has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of September 8, 2008.
