This was an announced routine inspection of a non-destructive testing company authorized to use radioactive material for industrial radiography at numerous field stations and at temporary job sites in NRC jurisdiction. This inspection was limited to the conduct of licensed activities based out of the company's field station in O'Fallon, Missouri. At the time of the inspection, the licensee employed six radiographers who worked out of this facility, though they were usually only physically present when collecting and returning equipment, film, and documentation.
These radiographers primarily worked at job sites in Illinois, though occasionally in Missouri as well.
During the inspection, the inspector toured the licensee's facility, including the material storage area, and the licensee's radiography truck to evaluate the licensee's measures for material security, access control, postings, and exposure control. During the tour, the inspector performed independent surveys and verified the licensee equipment and instrumentation appeared to be operational and in good material condition. Though authorized, the licensee did not perform radiographic operations at the field station, and there were no temporary job sites within a reasonable distance to observe operations. The inspector observed a radiographer demonstrate the licensee's procedures for material receipt, inventory control and boundary setup. The inspector also interviewed the radiographer, the Assistant RSO and the Radiation Safety Specialist regarding source receipt, transfer, shipment, and disposal, instrumentation calibration and dosimetry exchange, routine inspection and maintenance of equipment, and emergency response procedures. The inspector also reviewed a selection of records associated with inventory, instrumentation calibration, dosimetry records, radiographer certifications and training, radiographer field audits, equipment inspections, leak test results, and field office audits.
No violations of NRC requirements were identified as a results of this inspection.
