INFORMATION REGARDING MULTI PURPOSE CANISTER SYSTEMS

Dear Mr. Shelton:

I am responding to your letter dated January 10,1998, requesting information on the r.1ulti-purpose canister system (MPC). The Nuclear Regulatory Comrnission is not currently reviewing any license applications for a true MPC that is designed for transporation, storage, and permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel. However, NRC is reviewing dual-purpnsa canister systems proposed by several vendors that are designed for both transportation and storage.

Dual purpose canister systems must meet the reqLirements in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 71 (10 CFR Fart 71) for tran*portation and in Part 72 (10 CFR Part 72) for storage.

The enclosed materials include informotion on typicel transportation and storage cask designs.

NUREG 1571, *Information Handbook on independent Spent Fuel Storaga Installations,' and 5

NUREG/CR 6407, *Classificatian of Transportation Packaging rend Dy Spent Fuel Storege Components According to importance to Safety," contain design and safety information on several NRC approved dry cask storage and trrnsportation cask designs. NUREG 1536,

" Standard Review Plan for Dry Cask Storage Systems," conts;ns detailed information on NRC's safety review of spent fuel s'orage casks. A similar standard review plan is beir'g developed for spent fuel trancportation casks.
