SUBJECT:

REVIEW 0F NEW AND REVISED INSPECTION PROCEDURES FOR POWER REACTOR DECOMMISSIONING I am requesting assistance from your office to review the attached new and revised inspection procedures for power reactor decommissioning.

These procedures have been produced in an effort to combine the NRR and NMSS power reactor decommissioning inspection programs.

This new inspection program takes into account, among other things, the new decommissioning rules for power reactors published in 1996.

I am asking for this review because the inspection procedures included here cover aspects of your _ office's responsibility including spent fuel pool safety, spent fuel handling, and radioactive materials transportation.

If you have any questions regarding this review, please contact Jack Parrott of my staff at 415-6700.

I am requesting that these reviews be completed by 1

March 19, 1997. The TAC number to use for this review is M97868.
