Dear Mr. Denton:

SURRY POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 CONTROL ROD POSITION INDICATION SYSTEMS In response to your letter of October 29, 1979, on the above subject, we have reviewed our present Technical Specification surveillance require-ments. Our present Technical Specifications specify that rod-out-of-alignment action is to be taken if a control rod is more than 15 inches out of alignment with its bank. The surveillance procedures in effect at Surry Power Station currently require corrective action when the rod position indication reaches or exceeds 12 steps difference. Thus compliance with the requirement for alignment within 15 inches has been maintained. .

As requested in your letter, a change to the Technical Specifications is being prepared to ensure that the control rods are required to be maintained within.:!:. 12 steps from the group step counter demand position. This change will eliminate any ambiguity in interpreting the requirement to maintain the control rod positions within.:!:. 12 steps.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact this office.

Very truly yours, JIJ/\ r, '
