Dear Sir:

I wi sh to report the f ai lure af ter 18 years of service of the pump which ci rcuiates water f rom the reactor tank through the deminerali: er.

This f ailure was responsible for an apparent violation of technical speci fication D-2 which requires that the pool water shal I be tested for resittivity before the f' rst reactor startup of the day. Wi th tt.e pump out of service meaningful measurements of the resistivity are not possible. The reactor was operated on Sept. 14, 20, and 21, 1979 without the measurements.

The reactor was operated on Sept. 12 prior to pump f ai f ure and the resi s tiv i ty was 2.3 megohm-cm. Af ter installation of a temporary pump the reactor was operated on Oct. 9 and the water measured 3.0 megohm-cm.

It i s a requi rement that tne measurements averaged over a month must not be below I megohm cm. Thus measurements that were possible do not inai cate poor water qua l ity.

When the orig i nal pump has been repai red it wil l be returned to service.

Very tru l y yours,

' _qa.d 'k,s r ,
