==Dear Sir or Madam:==

Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(ii), Entergy Operations, Inc., (Entergy) requested relief from the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Case N-770-1, as conditioned by 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(ii)(F) pertaining to volumetric examinations of the dissimilar metal welds associated with the Reactor Coolant Pump suction and discharge piping at Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 (ANO-2) (Reference 1). The essentially 100%
required weld examination coverage cannot be obtained on the eight welds in question due to interference or geometry. Stephenie L. Pyle Manager, Licensing Arkansas Nuclear One Entergy Operations, Inc. 1448 S.R. 333 Russellville, AR  72802 Tel 479-858-4704 2CAN081302 Page 2 of 2

The NRC notified Entergy via Reference 2 that the Reference 1 submission was lacking in important information that is necessary to perform their review and therefore the submittal was found to be unacceptable with opportunity to supplement. A conference call was held on August 6, 2013, to clarify the information related to the submittal. Pursuant to this conference call discussion, the following information is provided to clarify the submittal.
The intent of Reference 1 is to scan the welds with the same technology used previously (phased array ultrasonics) and acquire at a minimum the amount of coverage reported and approved via References 3 and 4. The desire for this relief request is to have a pre-approval in place prior to the next scheduled refueling outage for ANO-2 in which this examination will be performed (2R23, Spring 2014), thereby not being required to file emergent relief to exit that outage;  Entergy intends to scan the welds and obtain as a minimum the same coverage that was approved in References 3 and 4; and  The duration of the relief request is for 54 months, which is the duration that was previously approved (Reference 3 and 4).
This request requires NRC approval prior to completing 2R23. To support this outage, Entergy requests approval of this request by March 31, 2014.

This submittal contains no regulatory commitments.
Should you have any questions, please contact me.

Sincerely, Original signed by David B. Bice for Stephenie L. Pyle SLP/rwc
