Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:
River Bend Station - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-458 This letter provides supplemental information to Gulf States Utilities Company's (CSU) responses to Notice of Deviation 8622-02, dated September 19, 1986 and Notice of Violation 8716-01, dated September 15, 1987.        The previous correspondence stated that the                                                              sample collection system on the radwaste sludge tank would be installed, tested and operated. The latter correspondence stated that the sample collection system had been installed and tested but that numerous problems had been encountered in operating the waste sludge tank.
GSU has reviewed the waste aludge tank system and has determined that the operation of the system should be deferred.                                                                    The system is
.                                                            presently being bypassed and all solid waste is pumped directly to the vendor's solidification unit where'it is sampled and analyzed prior to solidification. This operational configuration will be continued until the waste sludge tank is actually needed (f.e. waste evaporators put into service). The Safety Analysis Report has been revised to reflect this alternate configuration.
Sincerely,
                                                                                                                                                                  '        4 L 8712220202  871215 ADOCK 050 B                                  . E. Booker
