WEED PURCHASES FROM SOLID STATE DEVICES, INC.

Dear Ms. Oskoui:

The purpose of this letter is to request information related to purchases of electrical components made by Weed Instrument Co., Inc., (V[eed) from Solid State Devices, Inc.,

(SSD) and subsequently supplied to Nuclear Regulaji5ry Casimission (NRC) licensees.

w-This request was discussed between yourself and E@ Rogs of the Special Inspection Branch on June 18,1997. During the telephone cc@versation you indicated that since 1992, Weed had made a commercial grade purchasgof oEd hundred transistors from SSD.

Eighteen of these transistors were used in pressure 3anstgitters, manufactured by Weed, that were subsequently sold as safety-related to NFIC licespees, e

y To assist us in further review of the issue, please provide %e following information:

1.

Components purchased from SSD, including dates and purchase order numbers and the method of purchase (safety-related or commercial grade). Include information related to the previously discussed transistor purchase.

2.

Weed equipment in which the SSD purchased components were used.

3.

Actions to verify the characteristics of the SSD components (such as testing or dedication activities).

4.

NRC licensees that purchased Weed equipment (which used the SSD components) and the method that the NRC licensees used to purchase the Weed equipment (safety-related or commercial grade).

5.

Any additionalinformation relevant to the use or review of SSD purchases.
