Amended Response to Inspection Report 50-313/89-30; 50-368/89-30 Gentlemen:
Pursuant to a discussion with Mr. Tom Westerman.of the NRC Region IV staff, this letter is being submitted to revise a previous commitment at Arkansas Nuclear One. Our letter (OCAN108903) dated October 6, 1989, responded to
-violation 313/8930-01 for an inadequate procedure which had resulted in a sheared shaft on Service Water Pump P-48.- The corrective actions given in-
"the response included an evaluation of-possible modifications to-the
: Service Water. Pump design to enhance _or-revise the current design, which requires venting air through the pump packing during a pumn restart.                    ,
This evaluation was scheduled to be completed July 1,1990. The
' Engineering Action Request was initiated and a draft Project Scoping Report (PSR) has been developed. This PSR is the design evaluation of several= items relating to Service Water Pump reliability, including-packing venting, lubrication, and cooling. However, completion of the PSR (resolving comments, assembling cost data, completing reviews, etc.) was delayed past-July 1, 1990. The Service Water Pump modifications are a                    '
non-outage ' activi_ty. Other preparations for the upcoming-refueling. outage            3 1R9 (scheduled for October 1990) delayed completion of-the PSR. The PSR is              '
expected to be completed by September 30, 1990.
