ZPS-1 REVISION 17 APRIL 1981 QUESTION 4 (OUTSIDE AUXILIARY BUILDING)

"A fire in the main auxiliary transfor=er or the reserve auxiliary transformer outside at the southeast corner of the auxiliary build-ing would create excessive s=oke.

Describe how the s=oke from this postulated fire, or any other fire on the south or east side of the building, will be prevented from entering the air intake plenu=s (for the diesel-generator rooms or other areas) which are located on the south wall of the auxiliary building directly above the transformers, and thereby activating the ionization detectors which will discharge CO int the diesel-generator roo=s."

RESPONSE

S=oke from an outside source, such as a transformer fire, could possibly enter the air intake louvers located in the auxiliary building vail at colu=n row 15.

The ventilation filters will remove 50% of all particles in the 3-micron range and 100% of particles in the 10-micron range; therefore, the major a=ount of smoke particles would be removed by the ventilation system filters. Additional filtration is available when the evaporative cooling units are operating in the su==er.

The diesel-generator rooms are normally ventilated and maintained at a slight positive pressure by the turbine building ventilation system.

'O The diesel-generator air intake fans operate only when a diesel generator is operating. The CO systems in the diesel-generator roc =s are actuated 2

by fixed temperature detectors, thus the presence of s=oke in the diesel-generator rooms will not cause an inadvertent discharge of the C0 7 syste=s.

The; actuation of the heat detectors in the diesel-generator rooms init-iates an alarm both locally and in the control room prior to actuation

-of the CO fire protection system.

2 At the south end of the auxiliary building a sheet metal enclosure is 7

provided.. Its main purpose is to limit diesel-generator fu=es and 17 smoke from entering the south minimum outside-air intake of the Control 1-room HVAC and Division 2 diesel ventilation syste=.

This enclosure should also limit the possibility of smoke from a transfor=er fire from entering these plenums.

--Since Division 1 and Division 2' diesels provide redundant power supplies to safely shut.down.the plant, the ventilation and combustion air intake

~

for.the. Division 2 diesel is routed to the auxiliary building roof

~ (elevation 591 f t 7 in.) to provide a _ separate'and diverse intake for 13

.chis diesel compared to Division 1 (and 3) intakes. The separate and diverse intakes, therefore, provide protection fro = concentrated com-bustion products produced by a fire'from the main transfor=er located south of the.. diesel building at grade (elevation 520 f t 0 in.).
