Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Subcooling Margin Monitor The purpose of this letter is to clarify our letter of March 31, 1983 (5211-83-017 RCP Trip on 25 F Subcooling Margin) with respect to tbc qualification of the saturation margin monitor system. We indicated in Enclosure 3, Item C1 of our response that "This instrumentation (saturation margin monitor) will be upgraded to safety grade during Cycle 6 refueling". This statement was in error. GPUN is evaluating this instrument system as requested by NRC Generic Letter 82-33 with respect to Reg. Guide 1.97, Rev. 2 in accordance with our letter of April 15, 1983 (5211-83-118). Based on this, our schedule for up-grading this instrumentation is, as yet, unknown but will be consistent with 10 CFR 50.49 requirements.

In addition to the above, it should be noted that we are experiencing diffi-culties in obtaining a seismically qualified digital meter for this system as indicated by our letter dated February 18, 1983 (5211-83-039).

Investi-gations are continuing.

Sincerely,

. D.
