RESULTS OF PERIODIC REVIEW OF REGULATORY GUIDE (RG) 1.143, Revision 2
RESULTS OF PERIODIC REVIEW OF REGULATORY GUIDE (RG) 1.143, Revision 2 This memorandum documents the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) periodic review of regulatory guide (RG) 1.143, Revision 2, Design Guidelines for Radioactive Waste Management Systems, Structures and Components installed in Light Water-Cooled Nuclear Power Plants.
The RG, which was last revised in 2001, describes methods that NRC staff considers acceptable for complying with the NRCs regulations in the design, construction, installation, and testing of the structures, systems, and components of radioactive waste management facilities in lightwater-reactor nuclear power plants. As discussed in Management Directive 6. 6 Regulatory Guides, the NRC staff reviews regulatory guides approximately every 10 years to ensure that the guides continue to provide useful guidance.
Based on the results of the periodic review, the staff concludes that a revision to RG 1.143, Revision 2, is warranted. The revision would begin with development and implementation of a plan to update by the first quarter of FY 2020. Completion is projected to be achieved in the third quarter of FY 2020. Following internal processing in NRC the staff expects to release a draft RG for public comment in the fourth quarter of FY 2020.

UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 March 29, 2018 MEMORANDUM TO: Brian E. Thomas, Director Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research FROM: Thomas H. Boyce, Chief /RA/

Regulatory Guidance and Generic Issues Branch Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research
