The purpose of the call was for Fort Calhoun to describe what they intend to do relative to seeking an exemption for a change in method of evaluation for the thermal methodology used to model the transfer cask inside the transport trailer supplemental shielding. Fort Calhoun discussed how it intended to supplement the draft exemption request that was discussed in a public meeting on 5/24/06. (The 5/24/06 meeting summary is publicly available in ADAMS under ML061560554). Fort Calhoun indicated that the thermal calculation it would submit as part of the exemption request would use a heat load of 18.4 KW as opposed to the technical specification limit of 24KW. Fort Calhoun and TN indicated that, although the calculations were not completed, the temperature range for the fuel cladding surface temperature was around 700F. The staff noted that this was near the 752F limit provided as guidance in ISG-11. The staff cautioned Fort Calhoun to consider simplifying options in their exemption request that would overwhelm the uncertainty in the thermal calculations that Fort Calhoun intended to provide as part of its exemption request. | The purpose of the call was for Fort Calhoun to describe what they intend to do relative to seeking an exemption for a change in method of evaluation for the thermal methodology used to model the transfer cask inside the transport trailer supplemental shielding. Supervisor, Nuclear Licensing; and Rich Jaworski - Licensing Engineer.
NRC Attendees: William Brach, Wayne Hodges, Ed Hackett, Larry Campbell, Jorge Solis, Blair Spitzberg (RIV), Scott Atwater (RIV), Ray Kellar (RIV), Joh Hanna (Resident Inspector) and Joe Sebrosky Transnuclear Inc., (TN) Attendees: Jim Axline, Robert Grubb, Jayant Bondre, UB Chopra, and Greg Banken (TN consultant)
